Witch House is an occult-themed dark electronic music genre that emerged from the internet underground around 2009. Built on heavily chopped and screwed hip-hop beats, drowned in reverb and distortion, it fuses drag music, industrial noise, and shoegaze into something that sounds like a haunted transmission from a broken VHS tape. The name itself was coined half-ironically, but the sound — slow, suffocating, ritualistic — was dead serious.
Pioneers like Salem, oOoOO, and †‡† (Ritualz) defined the first wave with lo-fi production and occult imagery — inverted crosses, corrupted Unicode symbols, and unpronounceable project names. The aesthetic was inseparable from the music: pitch-shifted vocals, sub-bass that hits like a séance, and beats that crawl at 60–80 BPM.
